Luisita pulls away by 15 from Cebu
DAVAO – Luisita kept applying the heat, as Iggy Clavecilla and Seve Roxas-Chua each carded three-over-par 75s worth 51 points yesterday for a second round 149 and a 14-point lead over Cebu Country Club in Senior championship division play of the PAL Interclub.

Clavecilla had two birdies, including one coming off the green on the 16th at the Rancho Palos Verdes here as Luisita also extended its lead to arch-rival Canlubang to 16 points heading into the final two days.

Roxas-Chua played for the second straight day and contributed heavily, while burly Pepot Inigo amassed 47 points with Luisita, as sharp as the opening round, threw away a respectable 43 by Lino Magpantay.

Lor Alaan was good for 50 points and led CCC, which also got 46 from club manager Clifford Celdran and 45 from Koichi Horii in a 141 that kept them in second place. Shigeo Saito fired 39 but failed to count.

“The thing we don’t want to do (going into the last two rounds) is to have the mentality of not to lose,” Clavecilla said.

Dave Hernandez also came out for Cangolf for the second straight day and fired 53 and the Sugar Barons counted the 46 each of Bing Bunye and Rolly Viray for a 145 as the defending champions need nothing less than a superlative round today, also at Palos Verdes, to stay alive.

Tommy Manotoc will play the last two days for the Barons, and Luisita will also tap former national and senior national champion Francis Gaston for the last 36 holes.

Manila Golf, starring banker OV Espiritu, tallied 144 points for the day for a 272 aggregate and a 13-point lead over Apo Golf and Eagle Ridge in the Founders Division over at the Apo Golf course.

Espiritu fired 51 points and Manila Golf also got 49 from Senior rookie Arsenic Laurel and 44 from Brian Cockrell. The 42 of Fausto Preysler failed to count.

Led by Lee Tong-hwa’s 49, Eagle Ridge fired 130 for the day and caught Apo Golf at 259 after Soc Cadayona signed for a 40.
