Smart Luggage Policy

Smart Luggage equipped with non-removable lithium battery will not be accepted as a carry-on or checked baggage.

For Smart Luggage with removable batteries, the following conditions must be met for carriage. 

Carry-on baggage

        •Lithium battery must be removable but may remain installed in the device.

        •Baggage must meet Philippine Airlines’ Cabin Baggage Policy.

        •All transmitting functions (e.g. Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi) must be turned off.

•Lithium battery must not exceed 160 Wh.

Checked baggage

        •Lithium battery must be removed and carried separately in the cabin.

        •Lithium battery must not exceed 160 Wh.

 Note: The terminals of removed batteries must be protected to prevent short circuit by taping the terminals and putting batteries individually into appropriate plastic bags. 

Restriction on the use of in-flight travel accessories

For the safety our passengers, Philippine Airlines prohibits the use of inflight travel accessories/devices including but not limited to the following: bed boxes, knee defenders, etc., which are either attached to aircraft seats, inserted between seats, or even block access to seat rows or aisles for the following reasons: 

  • It may prevent access to emergency equipment
  • It may impede evacuation flow during an emergency
  • It may damage aircraft fixtures

The following articles are not allowed to be carried in the cabin. These items must be put in the checked-in baggage:

  • Nail cutters, swiss knives, scissors, any bladed items or sharp objects
  • Umbrellas of any type
  • Bicycle chains and jacks or other similar items
  • Lighters, which contain “butane” as well as matches, are prohibited in both handcarried and checked baggage
  • Zippo lighters can be checked in or handcarried as long as it is completely drained of its fluid
  • Liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) in 100ml or less are the only ones allowed in handcarried baggage.  LAGs must be placed in containers less than 100ml and must be secured in airtight plastic bags as changes in cabin pressure may cause even well sealed items to leak
  • All kinds of adhesive tape (masking / packing / scotch / duct / electrical / rubber)

For safety reasons, dangerous goods (articles or substances which are capable of posing a risk to health, safety, property or the environment) must not be carried in passengers’ handcarried or checked baggage.

Batteries, e.g. Wheelchair Batteries

Battery-powered wheelchairs or other similar mobility devices with non-spillable or spillable batteries can be checked in under the following conditions:

  1. Pre-notification is required and acceptance is subject to Philippine Airlines approval;
  2. Battery terminals must be insulated to prevent accidental short circuits, e.g., by being enclosed within a battery container;
  3. Battery must be securely attached to the wheelchair;
  4. Wheelchair/mobility aid must be loaded, stowed, secured and unloaded while maintaining upright position;
  5. Battery must be carried in strong, rigid packaging;
  6. Battery that is damaged, leaking, or if not packaged appropriately must not be loaded.

Lithium batteries in equipment and spares are allowed as carry-on baggage only and are prohibited in checked baggage.

Lithium metal (non-rechargeable) batteries are limited to 2 grams of lithium per battery. Lithium ion (rechargeable) batteries are limited to a rating of 100 watt hours (Wh) per battery.

With airline approval, passengers may also carry up to two spare larger lithium ion batteries (101-160 watt hours). No more than two spare batteries may be carried in carry-on baggage.

Batteries must be protected from damage and short circuit. The terminals of spare batteries must be protected to prevent short circuit by using the original battery packaging, taping the terminals and putting batteries individually into appropriate plastic bags.

Flammable Liquids

All types of flammable liquids, including lighter refills, paints and thinners, are not accepted as carry-on or checked baggage.

US Transportation Security Administration Prohibited Items

The US Transportation Security Administration lists the prohibited items in carry-on and checked baggage to ensure travellers' security.

Hong Kong Advisory Warning

Items below are prohibited under the laws of Hong Kong and any person found in possession is liable to prosecution:

  • Firearms and Ammunition
  • Other Arms (Cross Bow, Electric Stunning Device, Harpoon, Spear Gun, Tear Gas)
  • Prohibited Weapons (Extendible Baton, Fighting Iron, Flick Knife, Gravity Knife, Knuckle Duster, Spear Gun, Spring Loaded Baton)
  • Dangerous Goods ( Caps for Toy Gun, Firecrackers, Fireworks, Flare, Popper, Sand Crackers, Sparklers)
