Travelling with Infants

Travelling With Infants

Infants at least 16 days old may be accepted for travel. Infants (less than 2 years old) travelling without seats must be held by an adult during takeoff, landing, turbulence, and when the “Fasten Seat Belt” sign is on. Philippine Civil Aviation Regulations allow an infant to be held by an adult who is occupying a seat or berth (PCAR 8.9.2.19).

A parent or guardian who purchased a seat for an infant but does not have an approved child restraint system (CRS) must be reminded to hold the infants on their laps prior to takeoff, landing, turbulence and when the “Fasten Seat Belt” sign is on.

Using An Approved Child Restraint System

  1. The safest way to secure an infant (less than 2 years old) or child (between 2 and 7 yrs old) on board an aircraft is in an approved Child Restraint System, in a dedicated seat, appropriate for that infant or child.  PAL encourages a parent or guardian who purchases a seat for an infant or child, to provide their own approved child restraint system (CRS).   The use of a CRS provides an equivalent level of safety to infants and children as that afforded to adult passengers wearing seatbelts.  (Reference:  ICAO Document 10049)
  2. A separate seat must be purchased for an infant who will be using an approved car seat or approved CRS.
  3. The infant or child using the approved car seat or aircraft CRS must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will attend to their safety. A parent or guardian who is responsible for an infant or child who is using an approved car seat or aircraft CRS on board an aircraft must be seated next to the seat to which the car seat or aircraft CRS is secured.
  4. Booster seats are not allowed for use on board the aircraft.
  5. Carriage of car seats or aircraft CRS must meet the following criteria:

These measurements serve as guidance. For information on the assigned aircraft, passenger needs to get in touch with Reservations.

Disclaimer:  Aircraft assignments may change due to certain unavoidable operational exigencies, please get in touch with PAL Reservations for details and assistance prior to your flight.

Note: Unit of measurement used is INCHES.

                 f. CARES Child Safety Device is the only FAA-approved harness-type restraint for children weighing between 22 to 44 lbs. This provides an alternative to using a hard-backed seat and is not approved for use in motor vehicles. It must bear two labels:

1."FAA Approved in Accordance with 14 CFR 21.8(d)" -or- "FAA Approved in Accordance with 14 CFR 21.305(d), Amd 21.50 6-9-1980" and

                        2."Approved for Aircraft Use Only”

Infants turning Two (2) Enroute

Infants who are already two (2) years of age at the time of the return trip are required by regulation to have a seat for safety reasons hence parents or guardians are hereby notified to call reservation in order to reserve a seat for the infant on the scheduled flight subject to availability of seat and the payment of additional fare.

The infant must travel with the accompanying adult to which the infant’s ticket is associated with.  If the accompanying adult cannot travel with the infant, the infant may be allowed to travel with another adult qualified to accompany the infant under the law provided the reasons on why the accompanying adult cannot travel is due to medical, death or immigration problem only and supporting documents are submitted to PAL.

Use of Bassinets

Passengers requiring the use of baby bassinets should book their flights and make the necessary reservations at least 24 hours before the date of departure. We follow One-Infant-Per-Adult Policy.

Philippine Airlines reserves the right to decline bassinet requests without prior reservation. Bassinets are available for prior requests in order to be guaranteed a unit on board. These bassinets are limited in number as they can only be attached to certain seats on the plane and are available only for flights with a flying time of three (3) hours or more. The Bassinets are about 70cm long x 30cm wide and shall not be suitable for infants over 6 months of age with a weight limit of 10 kgs. Bassinets are available in all aircraft EXCEPT Q300, Q400, A320 and A321.

The use of bassinets is not allowed during takeoff, landing, turbulence, and when the “Fasten Seat Belt” sign is on.
